Media release – New national AI framework will help schools with approach to generative AI

1 December 2023

Independent Schools Australia (ISA) welcomes the Australian Government’s release of the Australian Framework for Generative Artificial Intelligence in Schools.

The Framework seeks to guide the responsible and ethical use of generative AI tools in ways that benefit students, schools, and society.

As part of the National AI Schools Taskforce, ISA contributed insights and expertise on the role of generative AI in real-world classroom situations.

ISA Chief Executive Officer Mr Graham Catt said, “School leaders, teachers, support staff and students are all affected by this technology, so it is important that we have a nationwide approach to use this technology responsibly.

“Independent schools were amongst the first to embrace the use of generative AI and those that have done so are developing greater understanding of the potential advantages and risks of generative AI.

While each Independent school will make its own decisions and policies, the new national Framework will assist by defining how generative AI can be used safely, ethically and responsibly.”

“Schools have also highlighted the need for resources to support teachers, and with the framework in place we look forward to these being developed.” he said.

ISA’s submission to the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Employment, Education and Training Inquiry into the use of generative artificial intelligence in the Australian education system provided several interesting case studies of schools using generative AI.

ISA is the national peak body representing 1,209 Independent schools with 688,638 enrolled students (full time equivalent), accounting for approximately 17 per cent of Australian school enrolments and a workforce of 115,090 people.
