The new Direct Measure of Income (DMI) methodology uses the personal tax income data of parents and guardians to calculate the median income in a school which is used to determine the ‘capacity to contribute’ score for a school. (Updated 5 August 2020)

The Department of Education and Training ‘s webpage outlining the David Gonski led Review to Achieve Educational Excellence in Australian Schools. Contains a link to the review’s final report, terms of reference, review panel members and an issues paper. ISCA’s submission can be found here.
The Australian Government established the National School Resourcing Board to provide greater independent oversight over Commonwealth school funding. The Board will undertake reviews of different parts of the funding model. Its first review considered how socio-economic status (SES) scores are calculated and the way in which a non-government school’s capacity to contribute to the running costs of their school is assessed. On 29 June 2018, the Board submitted its report to Senator the Hon Simon Birmingham, Minister for Education and Training.
The next review expected to be undertaken by the Board will focus on the loading which delivers additional funding for students with disability, and the needs-based funding arrangements of approved system authorities.
